Mountain Vista and Russell

There is an issue at Mountain Vista and Russell for those trying to turn left. Typically around 7:30 A.M. there are long delays for northbound traffic on Mountain Vista, as you try to turn onto westbound Russell. Sometimes it takes 2-3 cycles to make that move. Seems a flashing yellow turn arrow would help.
Ron

This is an intersection that operates with protected left turns in all directions. Clark County has a contract with NDOT to install flashing yellow arrows only at intersections with the existing 5-head signals that allow permissive turns. Intersections like Mountain Vista and Russell, with that protected turn for all directions, will not get the flashing yellow turn arrow.
If you’re curious about which intersections will still get those flashing yellow arrows – I’ve put a list on this blog – in my previous post.
But I didn’t stop there.
For this problem at Mountain Vista and Russell I also reached out to the County’s Traffic Ops technicians to check the signal equipment, and RTC FAST, to study the timing.
Signal techs found…..most of the time – the signal here works. But they are having intermittent issues. Maybe that is when Ron drives this path.
Looking back, the County found they tweaked the detection zones in March so they’ll now check if that has affected the left-turns for northbound to westbound.
There crew will be back out there today (Monday), and they feel a fix will be made – by the end of this week.
Brian

UPDATE: After the show this morning, Clark County informed me that crews “discovered that the northbound camera would intermittently fail and a loss of detection would occur. The camera has now been replaced and the problem should be resolved.”
